BEARS - On Saturday 1 April, from 13.00, our magnificent VDL Stallion Show will take place again. Although it is going to be a festive day, this time too we are raising money for a carefully selected charity.
This year, that charity is Jouke Kalma and Team Friesland for Alpe d'HuZes.
Alpe d'HuZes is a unique sporting event that raises as much money as possible for cancer research and for improving the quality of life of people with cancer.
In one day, - june 1, 2023 - 5,000 participants climb the Alpe d'Huez by bike, running, or walking up to six times, under the motto 'giving up is not an option'. Raising money through participation in Alpe d'HuZes provides support to an amazing group of researchers. Researchers who are looking for new and better treatments for cancer.
Fellow villagers Jouke Kalma (59) and son Wybe (16), with whom family Van de Lageweg has had a good relationship for many years, are taking part in Alpe d'HuZes on their bikes because they believe that together we can work towards a world where you no longer die of cancer.
Jouke speaks from experience: ten years ago he was struck by cancer and was told the terrible prognosis, that he would probably have a few months to live. Now, in 2023, he is back on the tractor on his dairy farm and wishes everyone such a good outcome and cure as he himself has been privileged to experience.
One in three Dutch people will get cancer. Over 44,000 people die of cancer every year. Fighting cancer and paying attention to the cancer patient are very much needed. Alpe d'HuZes was founded with the aim of turning the powerlessness that comes with cancer into strength.
During the stallion show, we will hold a collection, the proceeds of which will benefit Jouke Kalma's team. Every euro raised will directly and 100% benefit scientific research into cancer and improving the quality of life of people with cancer.
